Introduction: Modern dentistry can be explained as a harmonious blend of art, science, and ever-evolving material. The evolution of definitive dental restoration techniques and materials has been strongly influenced by the aesthetic demands of patients throughout the history of dentistry. From rudimentary methods to the introduction of state-of-the-art composites, ceramics and resins, dentistry has transformed to offer more natural and durable solutions. This constant innovation has made it possible not only to improve functionality, but also to achieve aesthetic standards combining biocompatibility, resistance and beauty and reflecting the progress of contemporary dentistry. Technological advances and social changes have forced dentistry to adapt to an increasingly sophisticated aesthetic demand. Aims: This scoping review aims to map and evaluate the evolution of dental restoration techniques and materials over time in patients undergoing definitive restorations and in dental materials assessed in laboratory studies, in the context of increasing aesthetic and functional expectations in contemporary dentistry. The analysis will be conducted not only from a scientific perspective, focusing on technological innovations and clinical trends, but also from a psychosocial perspective, exploring how social, cultural, and individual factors influence the demand for aesthetic restorative treatments, considering oral health in a comprehensive manner. Method: The scoping review was based on the PRISMA-ScR review report guide and adapted the search strategy to the PCC model (Population, Concept, Context) to ensure the selection of relevant studies within the defined scope. The analysis covered published studies on the evolution of dental materials (composites, ceramics, etc.) and restorative techniques (CAD/CAM, 3D printing, etc.), with special emphasis on the influence of patients' aesthetic expectations, particularly about the impact of cultures, social networks and patient psychology. Results: 33 articles were kept after the screening process. The results reveal a strong correlation between patients' aesthetic expectations and innovation in dental materials, particularly ceramics and composites. Techniques such as CAD/CAM and 3D printing have made it possible to customize restorations to meet modern aesthetic requirements. The influence of social networks and social standards of beauty has also been an important factor in this development. Conclusion: This scoping review highlights the growing impact of patients' aesthetic expectations on dental practices, driving the evolution of definitive dental restoration materials and techniques. At the same time, it highlights important gaps in research, particularly about the psychological impact of these transformations and the need to standardise aesthetic expectations.
