Abstract(s)
This work is about the relationship between travelling experiences and the process of thinking about architecture, focusing on the creative and design process of the architect Manuela Braga. The research is organised in two parts. The first part analyses the premise of travel as a form of learning, contextualising its relevance over time. In this sense, we sought to reflect on how memories from different landscapes and cultures act and mould architectural production. In addition to these aspects, we present a reflection on the popular architecture of Azores, with the aim of framing the context in which Manuela Braga's works are inserted. The second part of the research focuses on the houses designed by Manuela Braga in São Miguel, in Azores, analysing how her travels are explored in her works. From this perspective, various aspects are highlighted, such as morphological characterisation, spatial organisation, choice of materials, construction techniques and the treatment of light. In short, she proposes travelling as a fundamental tool for architects, since it transcends geographical boundaries and can enrich and enhance architectural concepts. Based on the 'reading' of the architectural language of Manuela Braga's works, we see an intrinsic relationship between travelling experiences and the act of designing.
