Abstract(s)
Popular, traditional, or vernacular are usual denominations to refer to an architecture that occupies today a significative place within our Cultural Heritage, especially important in low density territories. However, despite this interest and the wide research accumulated in our European context about its material expressions, a careful reflection reveals that it lacks a clear and coherent conceptualization. . This is certainly worrying if we consider Heritage as a cultural construction, because it conditions the apprehension and conservation of what is intended to be safeguarded. Do we really know what vernacular architecture is? Does it still exist, in an industrialized and globalized society? How should we preserve this heritage? This paper addresses these issues from a cultural and critical perspective and outlines a more comprehensive and updated conceptualization for this architecture.
