Abstract(s)
This paper presents a clinical case and a narrative review of white lesions in the oral cavity, focusing on the diversity of their etiologies and the associated diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Oral white lesions, which include conditions such as leukoplakia, lichen planus, and candidiasis, typically manifest as whitish areas on the oral mucosa. These lesions can be caused by genetic factors, physical, mechanical, and chemical irritants, or even have microbial origins. Due to the similarity between these and malignant lesions, objective diagnosis is challenging and often requires not only a detailed clinical evaluation but also biopsies and additional tests. This study also discusses the importance of timely recognition of these lesions by healthcare professionals, emphasizing the necessity of a rigorous diagnostic strategy to avoid inappropriate treatments and potentially serious consequences. A clinical case is presented in this paper, illustrating the difficulties in diagnosing and treating oral white lesions. It concludes that a well-conducted evaluation and informed clinical management are necessary. Furthermore, the study reiterates the importance of continuous training for oral health professionals in the recognition and appropriate treatment of these pathologies, which is essential for the development of effective therapeutic interventions and the improvement of patient prognoses.
