Tal como os historiadores portugueses do século passado (XX) estudaram as obras
dos autores precedentes, atendendo às noções de periodização, também nós
procurámos ver nessa memória do passado historiográfico os principais motivos
para o estabelecimento de distintos modelos de periodização da Idade Média
Portuguesa. Neste artigo, principiaremos por contextualizar a importância da
periodização na História Europeia em geral, para depois nos voltarmos para a
explicação das opções de periodização na historiografia portuguesa, salientando a
relação entre as escolhas de autor, o sistema cronológico e o domínio
historiográfico preferido. Assim, numa visão intencionalmente retrospetiva
(partindo das mais recentes periodizações da história para as mais antigas),
revelaremos o contexto da produção historiográfica portuguesa sobre
periodização da História Medieval de Portugal.
In the last century (20th) most of the Portuguese historians have studied the works of the previous specialists, considering the established notions of periodization, we also sought to see in this memory of the historiographical past the main reasons for the establishment of different models of periodization into Portuguese Middle Ages. In this essay we present an overview of periodization methods and regarding periodization like a sort of systemized form to arrange the past. Beginning by contextualizing the importance of periodization in Western History, and then explain the most important choices of periodization in Portuguese historiography, highlighting the relationship between changing thematic foci, historiographic domain and author's choices. Thus, in an intentionally retrospective point of view - starting from the most recent periodizations (chronological systems) from History to the oldest ones -, we will reveal the context of the Portuguese historiographic production on the periodization of Portugal's Medieval History.
