Abstract(s)
Bruxism is defined as an involuntary repetitive mandibular muscle activity characterized by clenching or grinding of the teeth and / or compression of the jaw. This behavior has a negative impact on the stomatognathic system, which deserves the attention of the dentist. Several modalities for controlling bruxism are described. Among these, recently, botulinum toxin has been highlighted for promoting the temporary inactivity of masticatory muscles and improving their signs and symptoms. This paper aims to review the literature on the use of botulinum toxin in bruxism to determine its efficacy and safety. Analysis of published studies shows that botulinum toxin can reduce pain levels and the intensity of bruxism events (rather than their frequency) without causing significant adverse effects. It is concluded that botulinum toxin has a promising effect on bruxism control.
