A harmonia do sorriso desempenha um papel significativo na aparência geral das pessoas, o que leva muitos pacientes a procurar cada vez mais branqueamentos dentários. Esta é a principal razão para a popularidade crescente destes procedimentos. Entre as diversas técnicas, o método mais comum é o branqueamento em ambulatório, que envolve o uso de géis branqueadores em baixas concentrações, aplicados em moldeiras individualizadas fornecidas ao paciente para uso fora do consultório.
Apesar dos benefícios, efeitos adversos como sensibilidade dentária e irritação gengival são comuns. Esta revisão procurou responder à questão: “A má adaptação das moldeiras pode influenciar a irritação gengival, devido ao potencial trauma causado pelo contato direto com os tecidos moles?”. Para tal, realizou-se uma revisão da literatura nas bases PubMed, Cochrane Library e Science Direct, utilizando os termos “tooth whitening”; “at-home bleaching”; “patient tray” e “gingival irritation”, com o marcador booleano “AND”.
Foram incluídos artigos em português, inglês e francês dos últimos 10 anos, excluindo estudos in vitro. A análise dos artigos revelou divergências sobre o tipo de moldeira mais adequada. Os dados indicam que moldeiras com reservatórios não oferecem benefícios significativos na redução da irritação gengival, em comparação com as moldeiras convencionais.
Smile harmony plays a significant role in people’s overall appearance, which leads many patients to increasingly seek teeth whitening. This is the main reason for the growing popularity of these procedures. Among various techniques, the most common is the outpatient bleaching method, which uses low-concentration whitening gels applied in individualized trays provided to patients for use outside the office. Despite the benefits, adverse effects like tooth sensitivity and gum irritation are common. This review aimed to answer the question: “Can poor-fitting trays influence gum irritation due to potential trauma caused by direct contact with soft tissues?” A literature review was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library and Science Direct databases, using the keywords “tooth whitening”; “at-home bleaching”; “patient tray” and “gingival irritation” combined with the Boolean operator “AND”. Inclusion criteria were articles in Portuguese, English, and French from the last 10 years, excluding in vitro studies. After reviewing the literature, findings showed significant disagreement regarding the best tray type. Data suggest that trays with reservoirs do not provide significant advantages over conventional trays in reducing gingival irritation.
