Abstract(s)
This study was carried out with the objective of evaluating food intake and the sleeping habits of professional soccer athletes who act in the main Portuguese leagues (1ª e 2ª Liga). The football players filled out a questionnaire with information on socio-demographic data, habitual eating intake and sleep habits. The data processing had been performed in the SPSS, version 21,0. The significance level was p<0,05. Through the data provided in the questionnaire and after calculating the body mass index (BMI=Weight/Stature2 ), it was found that all athletes are categorized as normoponderal (BMI=22,8±dp 1,00 kg/ m2). The most football players (n=76 (86,4%)) trained more than 5 times a week and also the majority (n=81 (92,0%)) practiced gym training. The average daily meals were 5 ±dp and most do in their own home (n=75 (85,2%)). Most athletes (n=82 (93,2%)) also consumed dietary supplements and the reason mostly indicated was to achieve a faster recovery (n= 63 (71,6%)). The average sleep duration during the week was lower (8,5±dp 0,9117) compared to the weekend (9,3±dp 1,71). However, most athletes claimed to sleep for more than 8 hours a night (n=77; 87,5%). It was observed that the only athletes who complied with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the consumption of 5 fruit and vegetable portions daily, slept more than 8 hours a day (p=0,03), and the part of the football players who slept more than 8 hours a night, also took the daytime nap (p=0,42). However, although most athletes taking dietary supplements slept more than 8 hours a night, there was no significant association (p=0,75). The athlete’s behaviors’,in particular, sleep habits and food intake are crucial for quality physical performance, good recovery and consequently sporting success. There needs to be more and better information, in order, to improve the habits of football players.
