Abstract(s)
A má absorção à frutose, vulgarmente designada de intolerância à frutose, tem vindo a
crescer na população devido à utilização crescente da frutose na indústria alimentar. Se
nos primórdios da nossa existência o consumo de frutose se devia essencialmente ao
consumo de frutas, vegetais e mel, hoje em dia grande parte dos produtos industrializados
têm frutose na sua composição por se tratar de um monossacarídeo com um poder
adoçante superior à sacarose e por isso mais rentável em termos económicos. Contudo, o
uso crescente deste monossacarídeo tem acarretado problemas ao nível da absorção no
intestino delgado, provocando alterações na microbiota intestinal, o que tem propiciado
um maior número de pessoas com problemas gastrointestinais, como desconforto e
distensão abdominal, cólicas e flatulência, originando assim a perda de qualidade de vida.
A presente dissertação tem como objetivo apresentar uma revisão acerca da microbiota
intestinal, da absorção e metabolismo da frutose e de como é que a má absorção à frutose
tem um impacto na microbiota intestinal, modificando-a e contribuindo para os sintomas
descritos anteriormente. É também objetivo desta revisão dar a conhecer as estratégias
atualmente usadas para lidar com esta patologia.
Atualmente o tratamento baseia-se numa restruturação alimentar, adotando estratégias
que favoreçam a absorção da frutose e por outro lado minimizem a sua ingestão até uma
quantidade diária tolerável para cada paciente.
Fructose malabsorption, commonly called fructose intolerance, has been growing in the population due to the increasing use of fructose in the food industry. If in the beginning of our existence the consumption of fructose was essentially due to the consumption of fruits, vegetables and honey, nowadays most industrialized products have fructose in their composition because it is a monosaccharide with a sweetening power superior to sucrose and this more economically profitable. However, the increasing use of this monosaccharide has caused problems in terms of absorption in the small intestine, causing changes in the intestinal microbiota, which has led to a greater number of people with gastrointestinal problems, such as abdominal discomfort and distention, colic and flatulence, thus causing loss of quality of life. This dissertation aims to present a review about the intestinal microbiota, fructose absorption and metabolism and how fructose malabsorption has an impact on the intestinal microbiota, modifying it and contributing to the symptoms described above. It is also the objective of this review to present the strategies currently used to deal with this pathology. Currently, treatment is based on dietary restructuring, adopting strategies that favor the absorption of fructose and, on the other hand, minimize its intake to a tolerable daily amount for each patient.
