Álcool e doenças orais através antropologia: uma revisão sistemática

O consumo de álcool pode afetar inevitavelmente a cavidade oral, a mucosa oral e os dentes do seu consumidor. Os efeitos colaterais orais do álcool dependem da natureza e do conteúdo da bebida, da concentração de álcool e a frequência e quantidade de consumo. Esta revisão sistemática tem como objetivo analisar as ligações entre o consumo de álcool e doenças orais, respondendo à seguinte questão: “Quais os principais efeitos do consumo de álcool na saúde oral?”. Para a formulação desta questão foram considerados os critérios PIO assim como critérios de inclusão e exclusão. Foram considerados artigos publicados desde 2014 até junho de 2024 pesquisados nas bases de dados online de artigos científicos PubMed, ScienceDirect e ResearchGate. Após a análise dos estudos encontrados foram encontrados 9 estudos que atendiam aos critérios de elegibilidade e aos objetivos propostos. Estes estudos apresentam evidências que sustentam os efeitos nocivos do consumo excessivo de álcool na saúde oral. Contudo a relação existente ainda é um pouco ambígua pois existem vários fatores de risco que podem não estar ajustados em todos os estudos. Verifica-se então que os médicos dentistas são essenciais na deteção precoce de doenças relacionadas com o alcoolismo. Devem ter a capacidade de detetar pacientes com elevado consumo de álcool como parte das suas capacidades de diagnóstico. O desenvolvimento de uma estratégia de tratamento apropriada para estes indivíduos deve ter em conta a sua falta geral de fiabilidade e comprometimento. É também fundamental integrar médicos dentistas nas equipas de profissionais que constroem e aplicam os programas de saúde pública, nomeadamente nos de educação dietética e nos de informação quanto aos riscos associados ao consumo de álcool.
Alcohol consumption can inevitably affect the oral cavity, oral mucosa and teeth of its consumer. The oral side effects of alcohol depend on the nature and content of the drink, the alcohol concentration and the frequency and quantity of consumption. This systematic review aims to analyze the links between alcohol consumption and oral diseases, answering the following question: “What are the main effects of alcohol consumption on oral health?”. To formulate this question, the PIO criteria as well as inclusion and exclusion criteria were considered. Articles published from 2014 to June 2024 were searched in the online databases of scientific articles PubMed, ScienceDirect and ResearchGate. After analyzing the studies found, 9 studies were found that met the eligibility criteria and the proposed objectives. These studies present evidence that supports the harmful effects of excessive alcohol consumption on oral health. However, the existing relationship is still somewhat ambiguous because there are several risk factors that may not be adjusted in all studies. Dentists are therefore essential in the early detection of alcohol-related diseases. They must be able to detect patients with high alcohol consumption as part of their diagnostic skills. The development of an appropriate treatment strategy for these individuals must take into account their general lack of reliability and commitment. It is also essential to integrate dentists into the teams of professionals who develop and implement public health programmes, particularly those on dietary education and information on the risks associated with alcohol consumption.
