Abstract(s)
The World Health Organization recommends that sugar consumption levels should not exceed 5% of daily energy intake. However, more and more children and young people have a high consumption of sugar-rich beverages with negative consequences for their general and oral health. In addition to sugar, these drinks have an acidic character, which leads to a decrease in the pH of the oral cavity. In this way, the main objective was to understand the effects that sugary drinks can cause on oral health from childhood to adolescence. Thus, a narrative review study was carried out, based on 70 articles published in English and Portuguese, in the period from 2013 to 2023, through the databases: PubMed, b-on and Scielo Portugal. From the 70 studies selected, it was found that the introduction of sugary drinks by parents in the diet is done at a very young age, which may influence their choices in adolescence and adulthood. Health professionals and dentists play a very important role in educating the population about the effects of sugary drinks, advising them to reduce their consumption, or even avoid it. Efforts to regulate this type of beverage must be more effective, as there is still a high consumption by adolescents, which will influence their oral health, both now and in the future.
