Abstract(s)
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have profoundly transformed everyday life, especially in the way young people relate, communicate, learn and spend their leisure time. The increasing use of these technologies raises concerns about their effects on social, emotional and cognitive development, particularly among parents, who play a crucial role in critically observing the impact of digital technologies on their children's lives. This study is part of a literature review that is based on the presence of young people in digital environments, the risks associated with their use and the mediating role of parents in promoting safer and more controlled usage practices. Thus, the present work explores parents' perceptions about the impact of the use of cell phones and digital technologies on the behavior and development of young people, focusing on the intra-family, interpersonal, socio-affective, motivational and academic dimensions, as well as their role in different contexts and the balanced growth of children. To this end, the study assumed a descriptive and exploratory character, epistemologically inscribed in descriptive phenomenology, supporting a qualitative analysis. Face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were carried out with 10 people aged between 37 and 52 years old, who presented themselves as parents of pre-teens and teenagers between 12 and 16 years old who use cell phones and other digital technologies in their daily life, belonging to the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira. In general, the main results obtained suggest that: 1) digital technologies are seen as indispensable in the daily lives of young people, playing a central role in their social interactions and daily routines; 2) offer improvements in communication, easy access to information, educational support, learning opportunities and updates on world events; 3) however, they also bring disadvantages, such as excessive use, dependence, lack of digital self-awareness, social isolation and exposure to inappropriate content; 4) in the family context, parents observe a decrease in coexistence and communication, in addition to distance and loss of quality time between members; 5) regarding socialization, despite changes in their children's emotional behavior (anxiety and irritability), parents believe that ICT does not harm social interactions, but complements face-to-face interactions; 6) most parents consider that technologies do not negatively affect their children's self-esteem or self-concept; 7) the impact of ICT on young people's motivation is perceived as positive, since the majority are able to balance the use of ICT with other activities well; 8) technologies are considered essential for studying, without significantly interfering with academic performance; 9) young people with a strong family support network and stable emotional resources face fewer problems related to technology use; 10) parental supervision varies between active and distant, with many parents reporting difficulties or lack of interest in monitoring ICT use; and 11) most parents do not establish clear rules about the use of technology, although they recognize the need to do so.
