Abstract(s)
Introduction: Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD) is a common condition affecting the Temporomandibular Joint and associated muscles, potentially causing pain and functional limitations. Assessing the knowledge of healthcare professionals about TMD is essential to ensure an accurate diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan. The objectives of this research focused on evaluating the perception and level of knowledge that Doctors and Dentists in Portugal and Italy have about TMD in their Orthodontic practice and comparing the results obtained between the two different samples. Methods: The study was conducted through an online questionnaire sent to Doctors and Dentists with clinical practice in Orthodontics in Portugal and Italy. Data were collected and statistically analysed, emphasizing descriptive statistics and the analysis of frequencies and means. Results: The results revealed homogeneity between the two groups of participants, although in some cases slightly different clinical practices were observed, especially regarding diagnostic criteria. A lack of awareness about the importance of evaluating TMD in orthodontic practice was also evidenced, highlighting the need to promote continuous education and collaboration among healthcare professionals from different fields. Conclusion: It is concluded that it is essential to improve the training and updating of healthcare professionals regarding Temporomandibular Dysfunction, to ensure an integrated and practical approach in diagnosing and treating this condition. Awareness about the importance of TMD in clinical orthodontic practice can contribute to better patient care quality and more satisfactory outcomes.
