The José Braga house, projected by the architect Celestino de Castro, is an example of a direct importation of the values of Modern Movement to the Portuguese reality. Unlike other “moderns” from Porto, who use to associate an international vocabulary to a more cultural notion of the exact place where they project, Celestino de Castro overlays his ideological internationalism to the singularity of the site. Trying to underline this specificity, this paper stands on a detailed analysis of the building as well as on a recent interview with the architect, were he states the importance of Le Corbusier work, specially the Villa Cook, on the development of José Braga house’s project.
