O objetivo desta dissertação foi conhecer o potencial da toxina botulínica na reabilitação do sorriso gengival, abordando considerações estéticas gerais do sorriso.
Foi realizada uma pesquisa de artigos publicados nos motores de busca: PubMed, B-On e Science direct, datados entre 2001 e 2018.
A exposição excessiva de gengiva pode ser uma preocupação estética para muitos pacientes, interferindo com a auto-estima e, deste modo, afetando as interações sociais e também profissionais. Atualmente, existem diferentes tratamentos para o sorriso gengival e a sua escolha depende da etiologia. A toxina botulínica é uma dessas opções terapêuticas. Popularmente conhecida no tratamento de rugas, tem, também, variadas outras indicações em Medicina Dentária, tanto estéticas como funcionais. Tornou-se, assim, um método relativamento recente, pouco invasivo e que permite grandes melhorias estéticas num paciente descontente com o seu sorriso.
The objective of this dissertation was to understand the potential of the botulinum toxin in the rehabilitation of the gingival smile, addressing general aesthetic considerations of the smile. A search of published articles was performed in the search engines: PubMed, B-On and Science direct, dated between 2001 and 2018. Excessive gingival exposure can be an aesthetic concern for many patients, interfering with self-esteem and, thus, affecting social and professional interactions. Currently, there are different treatments for gingival smile and that choice depends on the etiology. Botulinum toxin is one of these therapeutic options. Popularly known in the treatment of wrinkles, there are also several other indications in Dental Medicine, both aesthetic and functional. It has become, therefore, a relativity recent method, non-invasive and that allows great aesthetic improvements in a patient displeased with his smile.
