Abstract(s)
The main purpose of this work was to perform an analysis of the benefits of the regular fish consumption on human health. Some key aspects related to the seafood consumption, such as omega-3's role in human health are presented and further discussed. It was based on a literature review of scientific papers focusing on the influence of fish consumption on human health. PubMed and ScienceDirect platforms were the main research engine sources used. The scientific papers were selected through the use of different keywords, such as: health, seafood and benefits. It was possible to characterize the nutritional component that can be provided through fish consumption, and particular emphasis is given to the fish's ability to provide a balanced diet on proteins, lipids, vitamins and minerals. The impact of fish consumption on health assumes the most diverse forms. In particular omega-3, existing in fish, is essential for proper growth and development of humans. Based on different sources, the optimal dosage of omega-3, considering the different types of seafood, was defined. The specificity of the fish consumption to mitigate the effect of chronic pathologies, such as the cardiovascular disease, is also discussed. The impact that the omega-3 has over the period of pregnancy and the first years of life is of high relevance, and a section is therefore dedicated to the discussion of this topic. Finally, it is emphasized the influence of fish consumption in a healthy ageing. In summary a clear benefit in a balanced fish consumption for the health improvement of human beings was found. Based on different sources and studies, a clear advantage in the consumption of recommended doses of seafood since pregnancy, through the first years of life to the aging stage of the human being was identifiable. These benefits, particularly related to the existence of omega-3 and other constituents, such as selenium, are important to mitigate the effects of various chronic diseases that may unsettle humans, and even in improving the cognitive skills during the first years of life.
