Abstract(s)
In the last few years, aesthetics has become incredibly important in society. The smile is widely recognized as essential for making good first impressions and plays a significant role in personal and professional relationships. The main objective of this study is to classify the prevalence of the type of buccal corridor in a population of patients attending the Pedagogical Clinics in Dental Medicine – Faculty of Health Sciences of the Fernando Pessoa University (FCS-UFP). A descriptive observational cross-sectional study was carried out, after authorization from the Ethics Committee of Fernando Pessoa University. The characteristics of the buccal corridor were assessed using frontal photographs in a natural smiling position, and lines were drawn between the labial commissures to calculate the distance between them. Another line was then drawn from the edge of the last exposed/visible tooth to the labial commissure on the respective side, using Adobe Photoshop© processing software (Adobe Inc, San Jose, CA, USA). Descriptive/inference data analysis with mostly non-parametric comparisons (IBM SPSS Statistics vs. 29.0, p < 0.05). The results showed that the most prevalent type of buccal corridor in the sample, 49.6% (95%CI: 41.5%–57.8%), was classified as "medium-narrow". The bilateral comparison of buccal corridors showed that the most prevalent situation was severe, with 68.3% of occurrences (95%CI: 60.6%–76.1%). There were no significant differences between the type of buccal corridor and the participant's gender, or between the type of buccal corridor and nationality. As for the relationship between the bilateral comparison of buccal corridors and the type of buccal corridor, there were no significant differences. In addition, there was no significant difference in the distribution of smile height between the different types of buccal corridors, nor in the analysis of smile satisfaction and the intention to change the smile by type of buccal corridor.
