Abstract(s)
Currently the world population often suffers from joint pain, one of the leading reasons to medical consultation and also the main reason for disability. Joint diseases affect the locomotor system causing pain and limited mobility. Nowadays, people are not satisfied with the existing therapeutic resources seeking for alternative solutions. Unconvencional therapies such as phytotherapy are significantly increasing, as they are able to solve or assist a wide range of health problems. Although the constituents and pharmacological actions of the Juniper are known, is still somewhat underestimated as a therapeutic agent. This study evaluated the analgesic power of juniper’s essential oil in articular pathologies, focusing mainly on pacients of the Unidade de Medicina Física e de Reabilitação do Hospital Escola da Universidade Fernando Pessoa (HE-UFP). So the main purpose of this research was to evaluate the analgesic properties of juniper’s essential oil in reducing join pain in the upper and lower limbs. The study was prepared in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki principles and aproved by the Ethics Comittee of the Hospital-Escola da Universidade Fernando Pessoa. This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in which the participants freely agreed to participate. This research included 50 individual of both genders, aged between 22 and 88 years old. The quiz/questionnaire comprised social demograpchic data such as age, sex, and also the existence of respiratory pathologies, medication and type of pain. They were also questionned about the intensity of pain before and after inhalation through a numeric pain scale. The sample was randomly divided into 2 groups: placebo group who inhaled sesame oil (n=25) and juniper group who received treatmen with juniper’s essential oil (n=25). The therapy consisted on oil inhalation for15 minutes. After an individual analysis of the quiz/questionnaire parameters, the Wilcoxon test was executed, using SPSS. The results were analysed statistically with a 5% significance level (p-value<0.05). In juniper group, 19 surveyed showed a significant decrease in the pain intensity, whereas the control group only 7 showed a decrease in pain. From the obtained results it can be concluded that there is a statistically significant decrease in the intensity of pain in patients inhaling the juniper’s essential oil. Although the results are promising, further studies are needed for the improvement of this therapy, to understand whats behind the pain reduction and the inherent action mechanisms.
