Abstract(s)
As palavras-chave aplicadas foram āseaweeds AND prebioticsā, āseaweeds AND nutritionā, āseaweeds AND microbiotaā, āmacroalgae AND prebioticsā.
Objective: Study the prebiotic effect of seaweed on humans. Methodology: A literature review was carried out looking at the prebiotic effects of seaweed, as well as their bioactive compounds. The PubMed database was used to gather information and articles from the last ten years were selected. The keywords used were "seaweeds AND prebiotics", "seaweeds AND nutrition", "seaweeds AND microbiota", "macroalgae AND prebiotics". Results: Since seaweed contains numerous bioactive compounds, it is considered beneficial for health. Studies have proven the prebiotic effect of polysaccharides from seaweed, as they are responsible for modulating the intestinal microbiota, contributing to beneficial effects on the human digestive system. Conclusion: The composition of seaweed has significant benefits for intestinal microflora. The prebiotic effect of their components has been proven, however further research should be directed at the impact of ingesting the whole seaweed in order to confirm its efficacy and safety.
