Abstract(s)
Oral rehabilitation using removable dentures is an integral practice in Dentistry, essential for restoring not only the masticatory function and aesthetics of patients but also for enhancing their quality of life. The study proposed to be implemented at the Pedagogical Clinics of Dental Medicine of the Fernando Pessoa University (CPMD-UFP) aims to assess the satisfaction of patients rehabilitated with these custom-made devices. This satisfaction indicator will be crucial in evaluating the effectiveness of rehabilitations. The study design involves the application of two research instruments: the Denture Satisfaction Questionnaire (DSQ) and a sociodemographic questionnaire developed for better sample characterization, targeting a minimum of 50 individuals rehabilitated with removable dentures who attend the CPMD-UFP. The DSQ is a tool validated for the Portuguese population by Rodrigues (2015), and evaluates critical aspects such as retention, stability, comfort, occlusion, aesthetics, and phonetics. The sociodemographic questionnaire allows for the collection of information such as age, gender, education level, type of denture the patient is rehabilitated with, and other variables that may influence the patient's experience with the denture. The objective of this study is twofold: it aims to quantify patients' satisfaction with their dentures and analyze how this satisfaction correlates with sociodemographic variables and specific characteristics of the denture. The inclusion criteria for participants are: adults aged 18 years or older, who are rehabilitated with removable dentures and agree to participate freely after being properly informed and giving their consent. The exclusion criteria are patients under 18 years of age and those who do not freely authorize participation. The results of the study indicated that the majority of patients expressed a high level of satisfaction with their prostheses, particularly in relation to comfort and functionality. Around 80 per cent of patients were ‘totally’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the speech capacity provided by the prosthesis, with an average of 1.60 on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being ‘totally satisfied’). However, the analysis revealed variations in satisfaction, influenced by factors such as age, gender and socioeconomic status, suggesting that these variables have an impact on patients' perceptions. In addition, occlusion was identified as the parameter with the greatest dissatisfaction, especially in mandibular prostheses, with an average of 2.47, which suggests that it is a priority area for improvement. By better understanding the determinants of patient satisfaction, dental professionals can adjust and optimize treatment procedures to better meet patient expectations. This alignment between clinical practice and patient needs will not only elevate the standard of care but also significantly contribute to the education of future professionals by elucidating the importance of evaluating the factors under analysis. This research project aims to be a valuable contribution to dentistry, both in clinical practice and in the academic field. Through the continuous improvement of prosthetic treatments and the enrichment of the educational experience, we aspire to reach a new level in patient care and dental education.
