Potencial terapêutico dos óleos essenciais em medicina dentária – revisão narrativa

Abstract(s)
Os óleos essenciais são produtos obtidos das plantas aromáticas, constituídos por compostos
com características hidrofóbicas e elevada volatilidade. São obtidos de plantas utilizadas desde
o início da vida primitiva para alimentação, cultos espirituais e ainda para combater as doenças
que assolavam a vida do Homem.
Entretanto, nas últimas décadas, o interesse nos óleos essenciais tem aumentado e as suas
atividades têm sido muito investigadas, pois na natureza, estes óleos têm a função de proteção
da planta, garantindo o seu crescimento saudável. Algumas das funções que estes óleos
essenciais exercem na planta podem ser relacionadas com a sua atividade no organismo
humano.
A característica biológica que tem tido maior destaque é a atividade antimicrobiana, uma vez
que os óleos essenciais apresentam o potencial de inibir o crescimento de bactérias, fungos e
até vírus.
Dentre os óleos essenciais abordados nesta revisão bibliográfica, destacam-se alguns com uso
já difundido na área da Medicina Dentária, como os óleos essenciais de Laranja e Eucalipto,
sobretudo por sua ação solvente.
Óleos essenciais de Árvore do chá e de Tomilho chamam a atenção para a área odontológica
por sua ação bactericida e portanto, seu potencial contra agentes causadores da placa bacteriana
e cárie dental.
Já o óleo essencial de Cravinho revela seu poder anestésico e o óleo essencial de Lavanda
mostra uma habilidade ansiolítica.
Portanto, vemos um potencial positivo para aplicação de alguns dos Óleos Essenciais na
Medicina Dentária na atualidade e a necessidade de mais estudos nesta área para o futuro.
Essential oils are products obtained from aromatic plants consisting of compounds with hydrophobic characteristics and high volatility. These are obtained from plants used since the beginning of early life for food, spiritual cults and to combat the diseases that plagued the life of man. However, in recent decades, interest in essential oils has increased and its activities have been extensively investigated, as in nature, essential oils have the function of protecting the plant, ensuring its healthy growth. Some of the functions that these essential oils perform in the plant can be related to their activity in the human body. The biological feature that has been most prominent is the antimicrobial activity, since essential oils have the potential to inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi and even viruses. Among the Essential Oils addressed in this bibliographic review, we highlight essential oils with widespread use in the area of Dental Medicine, such as the essential oils of Orange and Eucalyptus, mainly for their solvent action. Essential oils of tea tree and thyme draw attention to the dental area for its bactericidal action and therefore, its potential against agents that cause plaque and dental caries. The essential oil of clove revealed its anesthetic power and the essential oil of lavender showed an anxiolytic ability. Therefore, we see a positive potential for the application of some of the essential oils in Dental Medicine today and the need for further studies in this area for the future.
