Abstract(s)
A tese intitulada “Uso
do autoconceito.
sociodemográfico, à versão portuguesa do Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale
The use of the Internet can be very positive in our daily lives, however, if it’s used in excess and out of control, it can become problematic. The thesis titled “Uso Problemático da Internet em Adultos: Relação com sintomas de depressão, ansiedade e stress e nível de autoconceito na população portuguesa” is organized in two distinct parts. In the first part, is presented a systematic review with the purpose to analyze the status of the recent literature about problematic Internet use and its association with depression, anxiety and stress symptoms and the self-concept level. 7 papers that studied the relation between two or more target variables of this dissertation, from the B-on and ScienceDirect databases were analyzed. The results show a positive correlation between problematic Internet use and symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. It wasn’t found any papers that studied the association between problematic Internet use and self-concept, however, one of the analyzed papers found a negative correlation between this use and self-esteem, one of the components of self-concept. In the second part, it will be presented an empirical study, of analytical and cross-sectional nature, that intended to analyze the relation between problematic Internet use and depression, anxiety and stress symptoms and self-concept level in an adult Portuguese population. It was studied a sample of 265 adults between 18 and 65 years old (M=31,97; DP=12,05) that answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Portuguese version of Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2, the Portuguese version of Anxiety, Depression and Stress Scales-21 of Lovibond and Lovibond and the Self- Concept Clinical Inventory. The results show that there is a positive correlation, weak to moderate, between the sub-scales of Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 and symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress and a negative correlation, also weak to moderate, between these sub-scales and the factors of Self-concept Clinical Inventory. It is essential to continue to investigate the association between the use of Internet and the presence of psychological symptoms, and exists a necessity to reach a consensus about considering problematic Internet use a disorder or not and the definition of eventual diagnostic criteria, as well as explore causative relations that provide a deep knowledge about this phenomenon.
