- Caracterização de modelos biomembranares (micelas e lipossomas) para a determinação de coeficientes de partiçãoPublication . Matos, Carla; Moutinho, Carla; Almeida, Cristina; Balcão, VictorA drug´s mechanism of action is dependent and related to its chemical structure and, in the bottom line, to the ability of the structure to interact with biological systems. The phospholipid composed cell membrane is a particularly important system for the pharmacological action of a drug, hence pharmacokinetic parameters are generally related with the drug/membrane interaction. This interaction is dependent on the hydrophilic/lipophilic balance of the drug, a parameter traditionally assessed by the organic solvent/water partition coefficient. Liposomes and micelles, due to their composition and physical organization, can constitute basic structural models for the cell membrane, being a precious tool in drug/membrane interaction studies. The use of these simpler models allows for the comprehension of basic processes, from which a progressive complexity can be added to the system, for a progressive insight of the involved phenomena. In this context, the determination of the liposome/water, or micelle/water partition coefficients, can constitute an indicative parameter of the drug´s real behaviour in the biological system.
- Cirurgia oral em doentes hipocoaguladosPublication . Guimarães, JaimeNowadays, there are more dental treatments performed in patients on oral anticoagulant therapy, confronting the Dentist with the necessity to adjust its procedures. Currently, the evaluation of the hipocoagulation state through INR gives us a reliable information and thus, depending on the surgical act, could or could not be necessary to adjust the anticoagulation level of the patient. Antifibrinolitic drugs allows the accomplishment of the surgical intervention with some security, in most cases with the advantage of not being necessary to interrupt the anticoagulant, diminishing the probabilities of occurrence of a tromboembolic accident. Thus, in the presence of a patient on oral anticoagulant therapy, we must get a rigorous information on the anticoagulation levels and, depending on the treatment to carry on, the drug can be continued, allowing the performance of the surgery without major complications, since there are taken some local measures to obtain hemostasis.
- A dignidade no fim da vidaPublication . Hiller, AdalbertoThe way wich our society faces death, is also the Result of the way wich the same society faces life, because they are together in our way of life. Today, death is each time more distant from the familiar life, and is now a responsibility of the hospital, because nobody wants to have death near. Death is seeing as a failure or a sign from medical incompetence. Our objective is to reflect about the signs of the life we live in direction to death. If life has a sense, perhaps death as a sense too. It is necessary to live life in all her dimension, with all that she brings for us, in a way that death does not means the end, the failure, but the final line. We could appeal to the living people, for them to look for the sense of their lifes, and to live with dignity the fullness of one existence that have right to have the name of life.
- Grandes catástrofesPublication . Pinheiro, M. FátimaMass disasters have always been a subject of interest to the public, as they usually involve a great number of victims. Therefore, each country should carefully evaluate his capacity of response to an event including a considerable number of victims (wounded or dead). In order to achieve this goal, it is essential to create an operational structure and a manual of proceedings with an exhaustive description of the roles of all intervenient parts. Legal Medicine can have a relevant social and humanitarian role. As a matter of fact, it can apply its knowledge to the identification of mortal victims by using traditional methods or/and DNA analysis, when the corpses are severely mutilated.
- Hipersensibilidade do sistema imune e patologias da mucosa oralPublication . Barros, Liliana; Ribeiro, SofiaAn overreaction of the immune system to both infectious and inert antigens can lead to severe tissue damage. These hypersensitivity reactions are classified into four main types depending of the response-immediate or delayed and of the immune component involved. In this article we provide some evidences of the role of immunological mechanisms in type I and type IV hypersensitivity trough a relation with oral pathologies known has Contact Stomatitis and Oral Lichen Planus.
- Moléculas anfifílicas - lípidos - e formação de agregados supramoleculares: micelas e lipossomasPublication . Moutinho, Carla; Matos, Carla; Almeida, Cristina; Balcão, VictorThe ability for self-organization of amphiphilic molecules (lipids), forming structurally more complex systems, from micelles to liposomes, constitutes the basic foundation for many biological phenomena. Lipids, for presenting important physiological roles, correlated with their particular structure and self-aggregation properties, are an interesting field of research and development. A detailed study of the micellar and membranar environment is fundamental to the knowledge of micelle´s and liposome´s capacity of acting as solubilization enhancers, what would allow the gathering of valuable information about drug´s mechanisms of transportation throw biomembranes. Assessment of the multiple amphiphilic molecule´s characteristics, together with the evaluation of the organized structures formed, is of the best interest for the comprehension of certain physiological functions, namely absorption, distribution and dynamics of certain compounds in the human organism.
- Processos automáticos de titulação baseados em sistemas discretos e de fluxo – evolução ao longo dos temposPublication . Moutinho, Carla; Matos, Carla; Almeida, Cristina; Balcão, VictorThe continuous necessity of create new analytical methods and to adapt them to the increasing demands of control and monitoring have promote the appearance and development of many areas of analytical chemistry, as well as the interest about automatization of methods of analysis. Automatic methods of analysis had assumed a great importance, namely, in clinical chemistry and in a level of the environmental control. The automatic needs pass, also, for the titrations, as a result of a crescent search for this king of analysis in samples of different origins. So, in this article is doing a revision about the titration systems (discrete and automatic) described, until date, in the literature.
- Proteínas dentinogénicas: o material ideal para pulpotomiasPublication . Costa, Maria Esmeralda A. G. Ribeiro daThe pulpotomy technique consists in the extirpation of the coronary pulp and in the placement, in the entrance of the root canals, of a material that protects and preserves the vitality of the remaining pulp in the root. With that purpose, many pulp capping materials have been proposed, as the formocresol, glutaraldehyde, calcium hydroxide and more recently, the morphogenetic proteins. The aim of this work was the study of the action and use of those proteins, capable to induce the dentin formation, while capping agents of pulpar stumps in the pulpotomy.
- A requirement for the abnormal spindle protein to organise microtubules of the central spindle for cytokinesis in drosophilaPublication . Riparbelli, Maria Giovanna; Callaini, Giuliano; Glover, David M.; Avides, Maria do CarmoDrosophila abnormal spindle (asp) mutants exhibit a mitotic metaphase checkpoint arrest with abnormal spindle poles, which reflects a requirement for Asp for the integrity of microtubule organising centres. In male meiosis, the absence of a strong spindle integrity checkpoint enables asp mutant cells to proceed through telophase. However, the central spindle region is not correctly organised and cells frequently fail to complete cytokinesis. We speculate that Asp is associated with the minus ends of microtubules that have been released from the spindle poles to form the central spindle.
- Restaurações de fracturas coronárias de dentes anterioresPublication . Melo, Paulo; Domingues, Joana; Teixeira, Liliana; Manarte-Monteiro, Patricia; Monteiro, BeatrizNowadays crown fractures of anterior teeth are getting more common in children and teenagers. These kinds of accidents can affect them for the rest of them lives, behalf of their age, gender or socioeconomic status. This is one of the reasons why dentists are always trying to find different solutions for the treatment of these cases. Mainly in anterior teeth fractures involving enamel or enamel and dentin, one has the direct restoration solution, using composite resin. In this case, the introduction of the “self-etch” technique, and the evolution of adhesive systems and the better physical and aesthetic behaviour of the composite resins, lead to better results. Thus, one can consider the direct restoration as a valid solution that can be done quickly and still is aesthetic and as an excellent clinical behaviour. The authors present a clinical case of an extended traumatic fracture treated with a micro-hibrid composite resin.
