- Strategies to promote circular economy in the management of construction and demolition waste at the regional level: a case study in Manaus, BrazilPublication . Oliveira, Maria do Perpétuo Socorro Lamego; de Oliveira, Evailton Arantes; Fonseca, A.M.Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) cause environmental impacts in a worldwide scale. The existing international concern regarding the adequate management of CDW is justified by the large amount of this waste produced in a daily basis, together with its potential hazardous effects on ecosystems and human health. In this scope, the application of Circular Economy principles to the construction industry is of the utmost importance to define management strategies regarding CDW. Although highly dependent on policies developed at the national level, the promotion of circularity in construction materials usage is also at the reach of local administration bodies. The present research identifies strategies for CDW management at the regional level, involving different stakeholders of the construction industry. These strategies were successfully operationalized through a case study focusing CDW management in the municipality of Manaus, in the centre of the Amazon Forest. The characterization of the reference situation regarding CDW management in Manaus revealed several deficiencies, namely the lack of reuse and recycling opportunities, the unsupervised disposal of CDW in illegal landfills, together with insufficient surveillance procedures and inadequate policies from regional authorities. Improved CDW management strategies were identified and operationalized: valorization of CDW through the enhancement of reuse and recycling opportunities, operationalized through a mobile phone application; reinforcement of training and surveillance practices; and alterations in the municipal policies regarding CDW disposal in the public landfill. The CDW management strategies described and validated in this research are applicable to other Brazilian municipalities or to other countries’ realities, promoting sustainability-oriented practices that can co-exist with economic development.
- Flour fortification with grape must for nutritional and health benefitsPublication . Ferreira da Vinha, Ana; Silva, Carla Sousa e; Brenha, João; Sampaio, RicardoCurrently, dietary health natural supplements have increasingly used in the prevention and treatment of chronic disorders. Moreover, deficiencies of macro and micronutrients, (vitamins and minerals), and non-nutrients (polyphenolics) have mainly cause several illnesses, especially in children and women worldwide. World organizations have focused great efforts to address these shortcomings and improve the health of the populations. Grape must, or commonly known as grape must juice, becomes a valued ingredient with nutritional and chemical qualities already recognized. Four portuguese grapevine must (Touriga Nacional; Touriga Franca; Tinta Roriz and Vinha Velha) were analysed and results of phytochemical screening revealed that Touriga Nacional grape must contains a number of medicinally active secondary metabolites, with highest total phenolic and flavonoids contents (325.2 mg GAE/L and 218.3 mg CE/L, respectively). In contrast, Tinta Roriz exhibited the lowest values (144.4 mg GAE/L and 18.3 mg CE/L, respectively). Natural pigments were also investigated, with significantly different levels of anthocyanins in all four portuguese grapevine must: Touriga Nacional (23%), Touriga Franca (63%), Tinta Roriz (70%), and Vinha Velha (19%). Apart from the sensory attributes that grape must can impart in commercial flours, the presence of non-nutrient compounds (polyphenols) is an asset in the development of new functional foods, namely in flours for infant formulations, preteens, teens, adult and athletes.

- Zonas críticas do antropocenoPublication .
- Occupational health resource classification instrument (OHRCI) in the oil industry, BrazilPublication . Albuquerque, Rafael Amaral; Carvalho, Marcelo Barbosa; Dinis, Maria Alzira Pimenta; Viterbo, Lilian Monteiro FerrariThe study describes the development of the Occupational Health Resource Classification Instrument (OHRCI) aiming to classify the levels of occupational health care in the oil industry, Brazil, considering the aspects of prevention and health promotion.OHRCI was developed by 6 recognized experts in occupational health management with at least 10 years of experience. For content validation, the Delphi Technique was used, with 20 specialists from the fields of medicine, dentistry, social work, nutrition and psychology participating in 40 meetings with an average duration of 2 hours each. All proposed adjustment recommendations were incorporated and accepted.OHCRI tool was structured. It considers the characteristics of the oil companies regarding the assessment of risk scenarios, location and exposed population, resulting in a score between 1 and 16. Nine levels of occupational health care were defined, which allows to objectively consider the dimension of the workforce and attendance modality. The results of OHCRI tool allow specific strategic actions in people management, related to the monitoring of work processes and adaptation of professional skills. The proposed tool is considered validated and its application generates business value, ensuring the maintenance of resources for comprehensive health care and attendance level adequate to the needs of the oil industry and workers and associated compliance aspects.
- Telemedicine applied to offshore medical emergencies: impacts on a Brazilian oil industryPublication . Martins, Douglas de Almeida; Menezes, Ana Carolina Braga; Silva, Vanessa Uchoa de Assis Martins da; Costa, André Santana; Dinis, Maria Alzira Pimenta; Viterbo, Lilian Monteiro FerrariThe study aims to analyse the impact of the use of advanced telemedicine resources in the management of medical emergencies on offshore oil platforms of a major Brazilian operator during the period 2018–2019.38 maritime platforms were analysed, totalling a sample of 5992 workers. Exploratory data analysis, adherence test to normal distribution (Ryan-Joiner normality test) and linear correlation test (Spearman’s rho) were used to characterize the data. 5 groups were defined, 1 offshore platform with advanced telemedicine resources (reference group) and 4 platforms without this support. Each group had data on the monthly amount of disembarkation due to health reasons, in 2018 and 2019, through common flights (1087 and 1207) and aeromedical evacuations (68 and 126), respectively. Finally, hypothesis testing was carried out for two independent samples, to compare the average landings of the reference group with the other groups. The reference group presented average landings for common flights lower than those of the other groups in 2018. In 2019, presented average landings for common flights lower than those of three groups and statistically equal to that of a group. In 2018 and 2019, the reference group presented statistically equal averages (P-value > α = 0.05) of landings due to aeromedical evacuations.Despite the possibility of other contributing factors, such as health management of each group and operation time of the platforms, this study allows us to conclude that, in 2018 and 2019, the group of maritime platforms with advanced telemedicine resources obtained, in general, lower average landings due to health reasons.
- Association between psychosocial risks and performance of radiology technicians in emergency context: outcomes of a cross-section studyPublication . Paiva, Inês; Simões, Helder; Matos, Paulo; Duarte, Elisabete; Figueiredo, João Paulo; Vidal, Diogo Guedes; Tavares, ÓscarThe workers' demand, the introduction of new technologies and the increase in working hours are some of the main factors that result in the emergence of psychosocial risks. These risks compromise workers mental and physical health, and the well-being, leading to consequences not only at the individual level but also at the organizational level. This work aims to determine the capacity of the radiology technicians to work, the psychosocial risks to which they may be exposed, as well as the possible influence of these on their professional performance.

- Person-centred care-based crisis management: facing COVID-19 in an oil industryPublication . Rodrigues, Mariana Costa; da Silva, Vanessa Uchoa de Assis Martins; Albuquerque, Rafael Amaral; Dinis, Maria Alzira Pimenta; Viterbo, Lilian Monteiro FerrariThe study aims to present the strategies used in person-centred care, through measures to promote and prevent COVID-19 pandemic in an oil industry in Brazil. The corporate focus is on managing the crisis, converging economic interests, operational security, health and protection of individuals. In March 2020, a ‘Crisis Room’ was structured, based on the Incident Command System (ICS) methodology for managing interventions in the company, covering about 160 000 workers and 1000 health professionals, including physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers and nutritionists. The main strategies were: production of technical notes on COVID 19, development of software for monitoring cases, call-centre through a specialized centre with medical and psychological support, test implementation, implementation of sanitary barriers with temperature verification and filling of forms, as well as systematic technical forums. In the period of 1 year, 46 technical notes were produced, 61 388 cases were recorded and monitored, 30 373 gold standard tests (RT PCR), 484 686 rapid tests, 25 217 workers approached at health barriers and an average of 350 systematic technical forums, were carried out.Attention to the presented scenario and the mapping of the particularities in the emergency response are fundamental for decision-making, which can be impacted by the absence of strategies still in the reactive phase of the emergency. Despite the adoption of the ICS methodology in the management of the COVID-19 crisis, the incorporation of instruments aimed at individual-centred care were key strategies and foundations that have guaranteed work safety and the maintenance of productivity in this oil company within pandemic context.
