- Simulation tools and artificial intelligence in dental education: an online surveyPublication . Fabbrizioli, Nicola; Correia, Patrícia Nunes; Venda Nova, CarolinaThe rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies is transforming the landscape of dental education. This study aims to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of dental educators in Portuguese dental schools regarding the integration of AI and VR in their teaching methods. An online questionnaire was circulated among dental educators working at Portuguese dental schools, assessing the knowledge of AI and VR, the perceived importance of these technologies, and the views on its potential impact on dental education. Fifty-two dental educators completed the questionnaire. The results revealed that most dental educators possessed basic knowledge of AI, with a smaller proportion familiar with VR. A significant number of educators expressed receptiveness to incorporating these technologies into the curriculum, with 92.3% believing that dental students would be open to AI and VR-based learning. However, barriers such as lack of training, implementation costs, and resistance to change were identified as major concerns. This study highlights the promising potential of AI and VR in improving dental education by providing interactive, personalized, and repeatable learning experiences. Despite the enthusiasm for these technologies, the findings underscore the need for further professional development and infrastructure investment to overcome current limitations. It is expected that as dental educators become more confident in utilizing AI and VR, these technologies are poised to play a central role in shaping the future of dental education.
