- Perceptions of education professionals: contribution to characteristics, dynamics and behaviors in school environmentPublication . Caridade, Sónia; Sani, Ana Isabel; Nunes, Laura M.; Gonçalves, Maria João; Dinis, Maria Alzira PimentaSchool acts as an important mirror of society, reflecting all the social transformations that are taking place. It is also a space where it is possible to use strategies in order to manage and minimize the constant difficulties of everyday life. At the same time, school environment is where the children occupy most of their time, either through participation in the distinct educational activities or in accomplishing other leisure activities. It is also the environment in which the cognitive, psychological and social capacities of young students are encouraged and improved in a structured and pedagogical way. Daily school life is characterized by a plurality of practices and dynamics that, frequently, disrupt the good school functioning, and may also have an important impact on the developmental pathways of children. Behaviours encompassing violence and indiscipline are easily identified as recurring practices in the daily life of different schools, leading to the breakdown of social bonding through the use of force and aggression. The results of a study conducted with educational agents, i.e., teachers and non-teachers, aiming to analyse the perception of these educational professionals about the characteristics, dynamics and behaviours inherent to the internal functioning of the school environment, will be presented, concluding with the main practical and preventive implications of this research.

Parental involvement in school activities is crucial to promote social functioning. - The mediating effect of parental involvement on school climate and behavior problems: school personnel perceptionsPublication . Caridade, Sónia; Sousa, Hélder Fernando Pedrosa e; Dinis, Maria Alzira PimentaAs a reflection of the culture and norms of the school community, the school climate (SC) is a potential factor connected to students’ major behavior problems (BP). Parental involvement (PI) is considered as an essential factor for SC, contributing to promote good students’ educational results, as well as better social functioning. The present study aimed to analyze the mediating effect of PI on the relationship between SC and BP, taking into consideration the school personnel perceptions. A total of 329 school personnel (teachers versus no teachers) aged between 29 and 66 (M = 50.78, SD = 7.56), mainly female (79%), were integrated in the sample. Based on the perception of the school personnel, the results indicate moderate level of PI and SC, as well as the existence of different BP in the school context. The mediating effect of PI in the relationship between the SC and BP has been demonstrated. These results suggest that, if the SC and PI are improved, it could be an effective strategy to enhance the social functioning of students in the school context. This study thus contributes to a comprehensive empirical analysis of how PI can improve the relationship between the SC and the BP of Portuguese students.
- Youth victims of community violence: developmental outcomes and prevention challengesPublication . Caridade, Sónia; Sani, Ana Isabel; Nunes, Laura M.; Dinis, Maria Alzira PimentaCommunity violence (CV) is recognized as a complex problem, with multiple origins and expressed in variable ways, encompassing different types of violence and crimes (e.g., assault, rape, robbery), as a result of circumstances that are related to the characteristics of the environment. Due to socialization and independence processes that are part of youth developmental pathways, young people tend to spend more time away from home and on the street, becoming more exposed to violence and thus also contributing to repeated victimization processes. Different studies have shown that distinct situations may promote numerous victimization processes, with a particular impact on the developmental outcomes of youth and causing great suffering. It has been reported that exposure to violence in the community is associated with mental health issues, i.e., post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, poor academic performance, aggressive and antisocial behaviours, alcohol and substance abuse, along with multiple adverse health risk behaviours, suicidal ideation, and also resulting in subsequent homelessness in adulthood. With this review chapter, it is intended to analyse and discuss the impact that CV exposure has on youth, accompanied with practical proposals to prevent it. The concept of CV and the different types of violence and crimes that could be involved are examined, mapping the prevalence of youth affected by this form of violence, analysing the effects of exposure to CV, and concluding with initiatives aimed to contribute to the prevention against this sort of violence, and to minimize the consequences and suffering involved.
