A perspectiva cultural sobre o espaço público na definição de uma política patrimonial

Abstract

A cidade é um organismo vivo e contínuo no qual os seus habitantes tentam encontrar um equilíbrio sustentável enquadrado com as necessidades actuais e de mudança emergente a nível cultural, social e económico. Neste contexto, a cidade histórica encara a preocupação adicional da salvaguarda do seu legado ancestral, de particular relevância em cidades classificadas como Património da Humanidade, internacionalmente reconhecidas. A gestão da mudança na cidade actual é um dos desafios contemporâneos intelectuais e políticos do início do século XXI e questões sobre como a conservação patrimonial pode contribuir para uma renovada cultura urbana têm vindo a assumir lugar de destaque (Whitney; Strange, 2001).

The city is a living and continuously evolving organism in which its inhabitants are trying to find a suitable framework for changing cultural, social and economic demands and needs. Higher pressure is placed onto historic cities, which have to face the additional layer of conservation of its historical legacy where the world heritage cities stand up as outstanding examples internationally recognised and thus designated. Managing change in the modern historic nuclei is one of the political and intellectual challenges facing us at the beginning of the XXIstC and questions about how heritage-based conservation can contribute to a renewed urban culture have been assuming growing importance.
