The integration of sustainability in public universities is an essential response to contemporary environmental and social challenges. In a global context of increasing awareness about climate change, scarcity of natural resources and the need for social equity, higher education institutions are seen as central to promoting sustainable practices and preparing future conscious leaders. Academic sustainability goes beyond the adoption of basic environmental measures, encompassing an integrated approach that fosters interdisciplinarity, applied research and community commitment. Public universities have the potential to catalyze significant changes both in their daily operations and in influencing public policies, cultivating citizen awareness and promoting technological and social innovations to face emerging challenges. The aim, therefore, was to ensure the implementation of sustainable practices in public universities and their impact on promoting environmental sustainability and the health of academic communities. Methodologically, an exploratory and comparative bibliographic review was applied through qualitative research compared with data obtained from management reports and sustainable logistic plans. It was observed that responsible waste management has directly contributed alleviating poverty and preserving the environment, that the female gender, even when in the majority, does not occupy majority of leadership positions, that health and well-being in the work continues to face silence in the case of mental health, that partnerships and means of implementation are viable, when well structured. These actions benefit the university community, including students, faculty and staff, and also have positive repercussions on the local neighborhood and beyond. In addition to environmental benefits, public universities are primary in education and awareness about sustainability. Through educational programs, academic research and community engagement, these institutions have the power to influence a new generation of conscientious and responsible leaders. Students involved in curricula integrated with environmental themes are more likely to become advocates for sustainable practices in their future careers and in society at large. It was concluded, therefore, that by demonstrating commitment to ambitious and achievable environmental goals, these institutions not only inspire other educational entities, but also influence public policies and private sectors to adopt similar strategies. This leadership role is crucial to driving a broader transformation towards global sustainable development. In the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it was emphasized how public universities can contribute to several SDGs, such as No Poverty (SDG 1), No Hunger (SDG 2), Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Gender Equality (SDG 5) Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12) and Partnerships to Achieve the Objectives (SDG 17). By aligning their practices and objectives with these global goals, universities strengthen their local impact as they expand their relevance and contribution to pressing global challenges.
