Os encontros entre os Portugueses e os Japoneses no sec. XVI tiveram um papel importante na história do Japão. Para além de estabelecerem relações comerciais entre os dois países e de levarem o Cristianismo ao Japão, os Portugueses proporcionaram o primeiro contacto com uma cultura diferente e com o Outro, contra o qual a identidade japonesa começou a ganhar forma.
Partindo de uma análise histórica e com base numa análise de textos escolares e em entrevistas realizadas no Japão, este artigo apresenta uma análise do que os Japoneses aprendem sobre os Portugueses e a ideia que fazem deles. A principal conclusão é de que Portugueses, comércio e Cristianismo são vistos como indissociáveis, tal como de facto o foram historicamente.
The encounters between the Portuguese and the Japanese in the sixteenth century played an important role in the history of Japan.
The Portuguese established trade relations between the two countries, introduced Christianity into Japan and, by being the first contact of the Japanese with a different culture, constituted the Other against whom the Japanese identity took shape.
Beginning with a historical overview, based on an analysis of textbooks used in Japanese schools and on interviews conducted in Japan, this article examines what the contemporary Japanese learn about the Portuguese and how they are taught to perceive them.
The main conclusion is that the Portuguese, trade and Christianity are seen as being closely associated, just as in fact they were in the past.
