O presente estudo concentra-se na análise da influência do contexto (setting) nas experiências subjetivas de consumidores de substâncias psicadélicas, com ênfase em dimensões como alterações da perceção, angústia, medo intenso, bem-estar, compaixão/empatia e outras sensações ou emoções difíceis e agradáveis. O objetivo principal é investigar se o setting em que a substância é consumida afeta a intensidade destas dimensões subjetivas durante a experiência psicadélica e, se sim, de que forma. Além disso, pretendemos avaliar se as diferenças são estatisticamente significativas. Os dados foram recolhidos por meio de um inquérito online a 224 participantes que se voluntariaram a responder. Os participantes avaliaram a intensidade de várias dimensões das suas experiências em diferentes settings: retiros, sociais/recreativos, terapêuticos/clínicos e “outros”. A análise estatística incluiu o Teste Qui-Quadrado de Pearson. Os resultados demonstram que o setting exerce uma influência significativa na intensidade das "outras sensações ou emoções difíceis" durante a experiência com substâncias psicadélicas. Em contextos de retiro e terapêutico/clínico, os participantes relataram uma intensidade "elevada" dessas sensações, enquanto em contexto social/recreacional, a intensidade foi "nada mais que o habitual". As demais dimensões da experiência, como alterações da perceção, angústia, medo, bem-estar, compaixão e empatia, não apresentaram diferenças significativas entre os contextos.
Estes resultados realçam a importância de levar em conta o contexto ao avaliar e interpretar as experiências com substâncias psicadélicas. Enquanto algumas dimensões da experiência são influenciadas pelo ambiente onde ocorre o consumo, outras permanecem consistentes, independentemente do contexto. Compreender estas nuances é fundamental para otimizar o uso terapêutico e recreativo destas substâncias, bem como para criar ambientes seguros e benéficos para os consumidores. Além disso, esta investigação sublinha a necessidade de realizar estudos adicionais para aprofundar a forma como o contexto afeta as experiências psicadélicas, a fim de orientar de forma mais eficaz as práticas futuras relacionadas com estas substâncias.
The present study focuses on the analysis of the influence of the setting on the subjective experiences of consumers of psychedelic substances, with an emphasis on dimensions such as alterations in perception, distress, intense fear, well-being, compassion/empathy, and other difficult and pleasant sensations or emotions. The main objective is to investigate whether the setting in which the substance is consumed affects the intensity of these subjective dimensions during the psychedelic experience and, if so, in what way. Additionally, we aim to assess whether these differences are statistically significant. Data was collected through an online survey from 224 participants who volunteered to respond. Participants evaluated the intensity of various dimensions of their experiences in different settings: retreats, social/recreational and therapeutic/clinical. Statistical analysis included Pearson's Chi-Square Test. The results demonstrate that the setting significantly influences the intensity of "other difficult sensations or emotions" during the experience with psychedelic substances. In retreat and therapeutic/clinical contexts, participants reported "high" intensity of these sensations, while in social/recreational contexts, the intensity was "no more than usual." The other dimensions of the experience, such as alterations in perception, distress, fear, well-being, compassion, and empathy, showed no significant differences between settings. These findings emphasise the importance of taking the setting into account when evaluating and interpreting experiences with psychedelic substances. While some dimensions of the experience are influenced by the environment in which consumption takes place, others remain consistent regardless of the setting. Understanding these nuances is essential for optimising the therapeutic and recreational use of these substances and for creating safe and beneficial environments for consumers. Furthermore, this research underscores the need for further studies to delve more effectively into how the setting affects psychedelic experiences to better guide future practices related to these substances.
