Abstract(s)
Introduction: The triad is a condition that occurs in female athletes, which includes eating disorders, menstrual disfunctions and/or changes in bone mineral density. Aim: to analyze the prevalence of each component of the triad of the female athlete, as well as to verify their interconnection. Methods: a computerized research was conducted in the Pubmed and Web of Science databases, including: free acess articles; in english or portuguese languages; observational, cross-sectional or longitudinal studies, and cohort or case-control studies that addressed the female athlete triad. Results: 5 studies that gathered a total of 1745 females, aged 13 and over, were selected. These athletes practiced various types of sports. The prevalence of the different components of the female athlete's triad was assessed both in an isolated as in a general manner. Conclusion: a large percentage of female athletes reports the presence of at least one component of the triad. Elite athletes, those participating in weight classifications sports, organized sports or who value aesthetics, have a higher percentagem of eating disorders, menstrual disorders or changes in bone mineral density, as opposed to athletes who integrate third division or school sports.
