Abstract(s)
The objective of this work is to assess the Dentist's knowledge about how should and can act in case of suspicion in the face of suspected maltreatment in children and adolescents in dental consultations. To this end, an online questionnaire was developed on the theme of child abuse and neglect, delivered to 185 dentists, 163 women and 22 men. Access to the group of participants was made via email directed to clinics with dental care and dissemination on dental platforms and groups, as well as on various social networks (Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram). For the bibliographical research, a search was carried out in the “Pubmed”, “B-On” databases and in the Institutional Repository of the Fernando Pessoa University. Regarding the signs of physical abuse in children and adolescents, the most common were traumatic injuries in areas of facial bone prominence (70.3%) and excoriation with an identifiable form (66.5%). With regard to the diagnosis of child neglect, low weight (64.9%) and poor child development (66.5%) were the most identified signs by dentists. With regard to medico-legal responsibilities, most dentists are aware (65.9%). And 34% of respondents said they didn`t know their medico-legal responsibilities. The knowledge of professionals in this area is insufficient, making it necessary to invest in training for consciousness, detection and forwarding of cases of suspected abuse in children and teenagers.
