As Disfunções Temporomandibulares são um problema significativo de saúde pública e afetam aproximadamente 5% a 12% da população. Estas disfunções são alterações patológicas da articulação temporomandibular, dos músculos da mastigação e de todos os tecidos e estruturas associadas.
Os sintomas otológicos mais frequentemente relatados na literatura associados às disfunções temporomandibulares são: tinnitus, otalgia, sensação de plenitude auricular, diminuição da acuidade auditiva e vertigo.
Esta revisão narrativa da literatura tem como objetivo avaliar a associação entre sinais e sintomas otológicos e disfunções temporomandibulares, alertando que é necessário realizar triagem destes sintomas otológicos, na área de Medicina Dentária.
Apesar das evidências de que a prevalência de sinais e sintomas otológicos nos indivíduos com disfunções temporomandibulares é superior à população em geral, os estudos sobre se o tratamento destas pode levar à melhoria dos sinais e sintomas otológicos são escassos pelo que no futuro esta deverá ser uma área de investigação.

These dysfunctions are pathological alterations of the temporomandibular joint, chewing muscles and all associated tissues and structures. The most frequently reported otologic symptoms in the literature associated with temporomandibular disorders are: tinnitus, otalgia, sensation of ear fullness, decreased auditory acuity and vertigo. This narrative review of the literature aims to evaluate the association between otological signs and symptoms and temporomandibular dysfunctions, alerting that it is necessary to perform screening of these otological symptoms in the area of dental medicine. Despite the evidence that the prevalence of otological signs and symptoms in individuals with temporomandibular dysfunctions is superior to the general population, studies on whether their treatment can lead to improvement of otological signs and symptoms are scarce, in the future this should be a area of research.
