Abstract(s)
recurso ao programa Statistical Package for the Social Sciences.
à saúde oral do paciente oncológico pediátrico.
Objective: To characterize the perspective of the nurses of the pediatric service of the Instituto Português de Oncologia (IPO) -Porto and of the dentists with post-graduate training in pediatric dentistry regarding the prevention, monitoring and treatment of oral mucositis (OM) lesions in pediatric patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was carried out, aiming at the application of questionnaires, one to nurses of the IPO pediatric service (n = 17) and one to pediatric dentists (n = 17), with questions related to diagnosis and preventive-therapeutic approach of OM lesions in children with ALL. The epidemiological survey was carried out between may 2017 and february 2018 and later the data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program. Results: Regarding the recommendation of preventive-therapeutic methods, there was no consensus in the means of prevention and treatment suggested by nurses and dentists. There were gaps at the time of diagnosis and regarding the number of individuals in both groups recommend with cryotherapy and palifermin, and chlorhexidine is widely recommended by these professionals. Regarding the importance of the relationship between the dentist and the nurse, some of the nurses said it was not important, while all the dentists considered it important. Conclusions: There is a need for prior training of pediatric dentists and, subsequently, nurses regarding the correct diagnosis and preventive-therapeutic methods. The importance of integrating the dentist in the hospital follow-up team and the application of a comprehensive protocol on the oral health of the pediatric oncology patient is highlighted.
