Abstract(s)
INTRODUCTION: A desirable child development is directly related to harmonious motor development, the focus of intervention of the physical therapist working in maternal and child health. In addition to the development engine, another determining factor for children's health is related to food, nutritional status is an excellent indicator of quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the knowledge of physiotherapists regarding the mother-infant’s nutrition and its influence on the baby's neuropsychomotor development. METHODS: This is a descriptive, qualitative and quantitative crosssectional study, carried out with 70 physical therapists in the city of Juiz de Fora, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The instrument used for this study was the application of a questionnaire that assesses the knowledge of physical therapists regarding nutrition and nutrition during pregnancy and breastfeeding. To collect the data, the questionnaire developed was applied to the 70 physical therapists who were willing to participate in the research, with part A for socio-demographic data, part B for the professional characteristics of the physical therapist, and part C for related data with nutrition and nutrition during pregnancy and breastfeeding. RESULTS: Only one question was 100% correct, but this percentage was reached only by the male gender, the female had 88.2%. Female professionals had 20 questions with a rate of 50% or more, against 16 of men. If we analyze the correct answers above 80%, we obtain from the 29 questions, only 11 have this correctness index by females and 9 by males. More than half of the questions both genders could not answer or didn't get the answer right. CONCLUSION: The results presented may serve as a foundation for the construction of new perspectives for food and nutrition education practices, enabling the investigation of neuropsychomotor development as an important factor in children with bad nutrition, low birth weight and pregnant women with altered nutritional status , thus being able to direct future studies in the field of Physiotherapy, which allow specific interventions for greater gains in the motor repertoire of these children and also discuss the need to promote nutritional education in the training of these professionals.
