O presente estudo de investigação intitulado, “A Deficiência Mental no Concelho de Arcos de Valdevez” tem como objetivo conhecer a população deficiente no Concelho de Arcos de Valdevez: quem são, onde residem, principais necessidades e preocupações com que se confrontam as famílias que lhes dão suporte. Esta é uma das preocupações do Conselho Local de Ação Social (CLAS), prevista no objetivo 2.1. do Plano de Desenvolvimento Social (PDS 2013).
Para a realização desta investigação foi necessário fazer uma revisão bibliográfica sobre as políticas sociais na deficiência, o impacto da deficiência mental nas famílias e conhecer as respostas sociais existentes no concelho.
No estudo empírico elaborou-se um questionário para a recolha de dados de caráter quantitativo, uma vez que se pretendeu obter respostas mais quantificadas, relativamente às necessidades concretas.
Priorizou-se a aplicação de questionários a 130 familiares/cuidadores das pessoas com deficiência, nas idades compreendidas entre os 18 anos e 59 anos de idade, pelo facto de contemplar a faixa etária de pessoas que já terminaram o percurso escolar e que, à partida, não frequentariam uma resposta social, estando numa fase da vida em que não estariam sob supervisão de qualquer entidade local.
Os resultados obtidos ajudaram a compreender quais são maiores fragilidades/necessidades com que os familiares/cuidadores se confrontam e quais os apoios obtidos através de vários profissionais com que estiveram em contato, em função da deficiência do seu filho.
The present investigational study entitled “The Mental Deficiency in the Municipality of Arcos de Valdevez” has as an objective to get to know the deficient population in the Municipality of Arcos de Valdevez: who they are, where they live, main necessities and concerns that the families that give them support are confronted with. This is one of the concerns of Conselho Local de Ação Social (CLAS), foreseen in the objective 2.1 of the Plano de Desenvolvimento Social (PDS 2013). For the accomplishment of this investigation, it was necessary to do a bibliographical review about the social politics regarding deficiency, the impact of mental deficiency on the families and also to get to know the existing responses in the municipality. In the empiric study, a questionnaire was elaborated to collect data of quantitative character, once it was intended to obtain more quantified answers, relatively to concrete necessities. The application of the questionnaires was prioritized to 130 families/caretakers of people with deficiency, between 18 and 59 years of age to contemplate an age group of people that have already ended their formal education and that will not frequent a social response, being at a stage in life that they would not be under supervision of any local entity. The results obtained helped understand which are the main fragilities/necessities that the families/caretakers are confronted with and what support is obtained through the various professionals with whom they were in contact with, in function of the deficiency of his/her child.
