Abstract(s)
Occlusal splints are the most common treatment for temporomandibular disorders, but also for other pathologies such as sleep bruxism. However, their relative effectiveness in the treatment of the disease cause has led to the development of new technologies. Then, occlusal splints with sensors constitute a new technological advance in these pathologies understanding and treatment. They are equipped with integrated sensors which measure the teeth's pressure exerted on their surface. The aim of this review of the literature is to clarify if the application of occlusal splints with sensors can be an effective method for monitoring patients. In the studies reviewed, it was verified that the occlusal splints with sensors have good efficacy, and they could become a reliable measurements source in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of bruxism and TMD. However, future studies will be necessary, aiming to optimize the devices technological developments and their functionalities.
