Abstract(s)
Forensic dentistry is one of the most important field of dentistry as it is important in human identification. Dental identification is a précised method, as teeth are very sturdy and stable over time. Teeth are trauma, pressure, humidity and high temperature resistant. It´s also reliable, accurate and low cost. To establish identity, post-mortem dental remains are compared with ante-mortem dental records that can include dental charts, study casts, dental radiographs and photographs. Other methods employed include rugoscopy, cheiloscopy, analysis of bite marks and genetic materials. Considering the importance of the work done by the forensic dentist, this study aimed to describe the importance of these techniques as a means of human identification and its contribution in the context of forensic dentistry. A strategic bibliographic research in the PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science and EMBASE databases was used to identify the published studies, with temporal limits from 2012 to 2018, in Portuguese and English. It is concluded that dental identification plays a fundamental role in the analysis of human remains, when it is not possible by visual or fingerprint methods. Dental identification is dependent on the availability, adequacy and accuracy of ante-mortem dental records that can be compared with the post-mortem dental findings.
