Abstract(s)
The purpose of this bibliography revision study was to assess the efficacy of spinal manipulative therapy, namely a technique referred to as High Velocity Low Amplitude Spinal Manipulation (HVLA-SM), for the treatment of chronic low back pain. Methodology: it has been performed a search in the databases Pubmed, PEDro and Web of Science using preestablished keywords. After applying the inclusion (randomized controlled trials in patients with chronic low back pain, written in English and with a PEDro score equal to or higher than 5) and exclusion criteria, 6 studies have been selected comprising 523 participants, and with an average PEDro score of 7. All selected studies assessed the efficacy and benefits of HVLA-SM against placebo treatments, physical activity, or other spinal manipulative therapies. Conclusion: HVLA-SM seems to provide a modest, short-term effect in pain relief and improvement of function in certain patients suffering from chronic low back pain, namely those belonging to a specific age range (≥ 60 years). Nevertheless, HVLA-SM does not seem to offer significant benefits over other spinal manipulative techniques.
