Abstract(s)
The literature has stressed the importance of studying the relationship between music experience and the dimensions of mental health and wellbeing. Given the growing presence of music in our everyday lives, the investigation of issues related to music experience and wellbeing is becoming relevant since music if often thought to promote wellbeing. This research aims to study how individuals experience the music in daily life and what relations can be establish with wellbeing/ positive mental health. A diverse sample of 255 adults (79 male, 176 females) between the ages of 18 and 67 (M = 35.36, SD = 12.50) participated in this study. Data was collected with resource to the Portuguese version of The Brief Music Experience Questionnaire (BMEQ), to the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing scale (WEMWBS), Mental Health Continuum scale reduced version (Adults) (MHCSF) and EADS-21. The results suggest that the participants present relatively high levels of positive mental health, and, in general, low levels of psychopathology (depression, anxiety and stress). Theare are still generally high values in the dimensions relating to the experience of music. Point out that those participants whose relationship with music is not just of listener, either performer, composer or teacher present higher values in some of the dimensions of the experience with the music and wellness. There is a positive association between some of the subscales of the BMEQ and WEMWBS, MHC-SF and EADS-21. Specifically noted that a greater commitment to the music, a greater psychoactive effect positive and increased behavioral reaction to music are also higher levels of well-being. At the same time also found that higher levels of commitment to the music, innovative musical aptitude, and psychoactive effect positive if associated with higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress. These findings are echoed in some studies and evidence that music can have a positive or negative impact on mental health and well-being of individuals, and can these data provide guidelines for psychological practice. Knowing the impact that experience with the music you have on daily life, will enhance the benefits that it can promote the health of people in general.
