Abstract(s)
Objective: To compare the efficacy of surgical treatment versus conservative treatment on the functionality of the knee upon return to activity in athletes, evaluating the levels of osteoarthritis, knee instability, muscle strength and using subjective assessment scales. Methodology: A search was performed in the Pubmed database, Web of Knowledge and ESBCOhost, according to the search terms. After the selection of the studies, following the eligibility criteria, the methodological quality analysis was performed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist. Results: Five articles were included, four cohort studies and one randomized study, encompassing 294 athletes. The articles compared which treatment was more effective (surgical vs. conservative) to increase knee functionality upon return to activity. Conclusion: The clinical outcomes were quite homogeneous for both groups, but the conservative group presented a lower rate of osteoarthrosis development and the surgical group was more effective in maintaining the stability of the knee.
