Abstract(s)
drogas, desarmonias oclusais, dentre outros.
Algumas medidas baseadas no
narrativa.
Bruxism is the parafunctional activity of the masticatory system that includes clenching or screeching of the teeth in non-functional activities of the stomatognathic system, which may occur consciously or unconsciously during sleep or vigil. The great increase of the occlusal strengths generated by bruxism results in extra loads not only onto dentition but on all the stomatognathic system, which can cause varied effects as damages in the Temporomandibular Joint ( TMJ), muscles, periodontium and occlusion. There are many etiologic factors for bruxism, such as, psych ological factors, sleeping disorders, chronic use of drugs, occlusal disarrangements. Therefore the different forms of treatment should be individualized for each patient. The parafunctional control, emphasizing the awareness and improvement of life qualit y, and complementary treatments such as the use of essential oils, seem to be the most careful approaches for treating bruxism, since a definitive treatment has not been fully elucidated. Based on the literature review, the main etiological factors, the co nsequences and the possible treatments for bruxism in children and adults are going to be discussed in this narrative review.
