Abstract(s)
Sleep is a natural and essential process and is a very important biological and physiological need for human health and well-being. It plays an essential and fundamental role in people's mental and emotional health. The main aim of this study was to identify and analyze the relationship between the quality of sleep and mental health in Health Care Assistants in Geriatric Institutions, in order to make a humble contribution to the visibility and in-depth study of this subject, which is so often overlooked. In order to achieve this goal, we had the precious collaboration of eight participants from two geriatric institutions located in the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. The participants were interviewed using a semi-structured interview script made up of 21 items and then administered the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The results of the research showed that the participating Health Care Assistants had a deficit in the number of hours slept per night and a poor quality of sleep, which, in the long term, can have a significant impact on their mental health, boosting the appearance of psychopathological symptoms such as irritability, anxiety and depression or sleep-related disorders, but also physical symptoms such as body aches and feelings of tiredness and fatigue, and these effects are clearly associated.
