Abstract(s)
The present study aims to study the relationship between self-esteem and attachment to the mother, father and peers in adolecents. The behavior of these dependent variables was studied according to the sex, age, socioeconomic level and people with whom the participants usually live. 108 female and male adolescentes, aged to 15 to 18, from 10th, 11th and 12 th grades of a Secondary school in Porto, participated in this study. Three instruments were administred for data collection, a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Adolescent Self-esteem Questionnaire (ASQ) – scale which assesses self-esteem and the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment – (IPPA) scale which assesses respectively, the attachment to the mother, to the father and to peers. The main results show the existence of significant diferences when relating self-esteem to the gender and age of adolescentes. It was found that boys have higher self-esteem and that with increasing age, self-esteem values increase for both boys and girls. With regard to attachment, there are significant relationships associated to sex. It was found that boys have higher values in terms of attachment the mother and father. Significant relationships were found between the attachment to the mother and father and the attachment to peers. This suggests that there is a tranference of the quality of attachment to parents to the establishment of relationships between adolescentes and peers. Lastly, significant relationships were also found between attachment to the mother, father and peers and self-esteem.
