Abstract(s)
Parenting plays a very important role in the child's emotional development and well-being. The literature shows studies focusing on parenting practices and their impact on internalizing problems in childhood, namely the Rejection and Attempt to Control dimensions. This study aims to analyse the impact of parenting practices on the manifestation of internalizing problems in childhood and focuses on parents' perceptions of their children's emotional problems and parenting practices, and children's perceptions of their parents' parenting practices. The research took place in a school context, in a normative population, and in a private school, where the sample consisted of 74 children aged between 6 and 10, of both sexes, and their respective parents. To collect the data, we used the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, to characterize the participants; the Egna Minnen Betraffande Uppfostran-Parents (EMBU-P and EMBU-C), which assesses the following parental dimensions: Emotional Support, Rejection and Attempted Control, by self- and heteroreport, and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), to assess internalization problems in children, based on the subscales emotional symptoms and relationship problems with peers. The results show that parenting practices associated with Rejection and Attempted Control seem to be associated with internalization problems, but it is important to note that, as expected, most of the children do not have internalization problems, since the predominant parenting practices are based on Emotional Support, through affection and care, concluding that these practices are seen as protective factors in the child's development. We reflect on some of the limitations found and make proposals for future research, such as parenting programs focused on inductive practices and psychoeducational materials for parents, in order to respond to possible needs regarding the development of their children.
