Abstract(s)
Parenthood constitutes a significant and multifaceted experience in the adult life cycle, with potential positive and negative impacts on mental health. This dissertation aimed to compare levels of well-being, anxiety, depression, and stress between adults who are parents and those who are not. A total of 473 individuals aged between 18 and 74 participated in the study, divided into two groups: parents (n = 250) and non-parents (n = 223). Two self-report instruments were used: the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Mental Health Continuum (MHC-SF). The results showed that parents reported significantly higher levels of social well-being and significantly lower levels of stress compared to non-parents. There was also a trend toward higher levels of psychological well-being and lower levels of depression among parents, although these differences were not statistically significant. Sociodemographic variables, such as educational attainment, were associated with some outcomes, with parents holding higher education degrees reporting fewer psychological symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of considering the context of parenthood in mental health promotion policies, suggesting that this experience may serve as a protective factor, particularly at the social and emotional levels.
