Abstract(s)
The self-esteem can be defined as a feeling that each person develops about oneself, it can be described from high self-esteem to low self-esteem. The low self-esteem is of greater clinical concern due to the fact that it can easily unleash depression problems. It is very common to think that the self-esteem of elderly hospitalized patients is related to the good experience they had with the health professional team. Therefore, it emerges with this study the intention to really understand whether there is a relationship between these two aspects, the elderly patients’ self-esteem and their satisfaction with de Nursing cares, using the portuguese version of Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSE) and the portuguese version of Citizen Satisfaction with Nursing Care Scale (CSNCS). This study has followed the quantitative research paradigm, being itself a cross-sectional descriptive and correlational study in a population represented by 30 elderly patients hospitalized in a Continued Care Unit. In Portugal there is a reduced number of studies evaluating the self-esteem on elderly patients and also a minor number of studies measuring their satisfaction with Nursing care. There has been no study found which evaluated the relationship between these, therefore, this study contributes to bridge this gap. Through the results analysis it was possible to conclude that the elderly hospitalized users have a moderate level of self-esteem and that their satisfaction with the Nursing care has higher levels, not showing any relationship among both. Futhermore, it is important to refer that the study sample was relatively reduced and, therefore, is not possible to consider it as representative of the Portuguese population in general, because the potential of generalization is limited. In future investigations, it would be relevant to carry out a study evaluating the same aspects, but using a sample with higher dimensions.
