Abstract(s)
After mastectomy, the patient may present complications such as pain, lymphedema, reduction of muscle strength, and limitation of shoulder joint amplitude. The objective of this study is: 1) to address the most frequent complications after mastectomy, such as lymphedema, decreased muscle strength, and limitation of shoulder joint amplitude; and 2) to verify which physiotherapeutic treatment is more effective in the recovery and improvement of the quality of life of mastectomized women. The methodology included a review of the literature in databases Pubmed, Medline, Scielo, and EBSCO between the years 1998 and 2010. Results show that electrical high stimulation is the most effective technique for the conservative treatment of lymphedema, and there was effectiveness in the use of exercise protocols for the limitation of shoulder joint amplitude. Lymphedema and the limitation of shoulder joint amplitude are more frequent complications in mastectomized women. Patients submitted to early physical therapy treatment decrease their recovery time and improve the quality of life. In conclusion, there are few studies with high evidence on the effectiveness of various therapeutic techniques in consequences arising from different types of mastectomies.
