Abstract(s)
The literature shows that there is an association between parenting practices and the manifestation of internalizing and externalizing problems in adolescents. More specifically, studies have revealed that high Emotional Support is associated with a lower occurrence of emotional and behavioral problems, while the same is true for low levels of Rejection and moderate levels of Overprotection. Most of these studies are based on adolescent self-reports; however, the perspective of parents hasn't been analyzed as much. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to analyze the association between parents' perceptions of their parenting practices and the perceived internalizing and externalizing problems in their adolescent children. This study was part of the research project " Os Nós e os Laços: Risco Parental e Problemas de Internalização e Externalização em Crianças e Adolescentes", underway at the Clínica Pedagógica de Psicologia (CPP) of Universidade Fernando Pessoa. Data were collected from the database of the Consulta de Crianças, Adolescentes e Famílias and from the clinical records of adolescents, with all necessary ethical and deontological assumptions fulfilled for the research. The results of the data collected for the research – through the instruments SDQ (Parent Version), EMBU-P, Screening Forms, and Anamnesis Forms – showed some discrepancies compared to the existing literature. For example, it was found that a higher perception of Emotional Support seems to be associated with a greater probability of manifestation of emotional and behavioral problems in adolescents; moreover, the results demonstrated that externalizing problems are more frequent in girls, while internalizing problems are more frequent in boys – these results do not corroborate the literature. These results can be explained by the fact that, in the present investigation, we are dealing with a very small clinical sample, far from what would be a normative sample used in other studies. Furthermore, it should be noted that the collected data are selfreport measures and not direct measures of the evaluation of parenting practices and internalizing and externalizing problems. Even so, this study is important due to the limited empirical evidence, in Portugal, of parents' perceptions of their parenting practices and the association they have with emotional and behavioral problems in adolescent children. Thus, this study can be seen as an opportunity to deepen the knowledge of these relationships in clinical samples of adolescents and as a contribution to an appropriate psychological intervention for this population.
