Portugal, à semelhança de muitos outros países desenvolvidos do hemisfério Norte, sofre importantes transformações demográficas tendentes ao envelhecimento da população. A visibilidade crescente que as alterações demográficas e sociais têm provocado e as consequências das mesmas para o quotidiano da população em geral e dos idosos de forma particular, suscitaram inúmeros estudos e investigações. Para a antropologia, este tema encontra-se, contudo, numa situação marginal. O principal objectivo deste artigo é, então, dar a conhecer um estudo da experiência de velhice num lar de idosos. Like in so many other developed countries of the Northern Hemisphere, Portugal has been suffering relevant demographic changes towards the ageing of its population. The growing awareness of the effects raised by the demographic and social changes, and their effects to both of general and the senior population, have raised a substantial body considering this a marginal subject. The main objective of this article is to bring to general knowledge one study case of the life of elders in a geriatric hospital.
